Karl adjusted his hat as he waited for his brother to catch up. Every summer, Karl and his younger brother, David, went on a camping trip. Sadly, this would be the last trip they would do together, since Karl had just graduated and he was moving out to go to college. This was a four day trip. Karl finally saw his brother making his way up the trail.
David was two years younger than Karl at the age of 16. He was skinny and preferred to reading and video games to sports. On the other hand, Karl was well built and loved sports. Even though the brothers were completely opposite, they got along really well. They helped each other out where the other was lacking. Even though David wouldn't normally like camping, he always looked forward for their yearly trip.
"What took you so long? I was getting ready to leave you behind," Karl yelled as David came closer.
"Shut up. I'm only a little slower than you," David responded.
"Whatever you say. Anyway, we're almost there. Let's make it up to the top of that mountain," Karl said as he pointed at a low peak. "This is our last day, so let's make it count."
"Let's do it," David said as he raised his hand in mock enthusiasm, then he took the lead. Karl smiled and thought his brother was stubborn, which wasn't necessarily a bad thing.
After a few minutes of walking, Karl noticed that the trail ended at the base of the mountain. "Hmm, it looks like we'll just have to find our own way." David agreed and they started to explore the best route to reach the top.
About halfway up, David pointed out, "Hey, there's cave up there. I'm going to check it out."
"Okay, I'll follow you up," Karl called back as he looked up at the cave about twenty feet above them; it seemed like an easy climb.
"You've got to check this out," David yelled down as he reached the top; he sounded really excited. Karl called back that he would hurry. He turned his hat backwards and started to climb. When he was almost there, a huge light burst from the cave. Karl's heart almost stopped. 'David!' He thought in a panic. Adrenaline pulsed through his body as he rushed to the cave.
The first thing Karl saw as he entered the cave was his brother. David was sitting on the ground, wide-eyed, staring at something. "David! Are you alright?" Karl asked.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Look at that," David nodded his head and pointed. Karl looked deeper into the cave and saw a pedestal with shards of glass on it. He continued, "There was a crystal on it, but when I touched, it exploded and pushed me back."
"Really? Are you sure you're alright? We can go back right now if you want," Karl said concerned.
David shook his head, "No, I still want to go to the top. Just help me up." He held out his hand and Karl grabbed it to pull him up. Right when they connected hands, Karl felt a shock rush through his body. Karl looked at his hand trying to understand what happened. "Let's go!" David called out, snapping Karl out of his trance.
"Whatever," Karl said to himself, dismissing the shock, and then said out loud with a smile, "I'm taking the lead though. We don't want any more crystals blowing up in your face."
"Not if I beat you there first," David called out as he rushed out the cave. Karl let out a small curse as he chased after him.
Karl and David walked back from the peak. They had made it there without any more incidents; they had almost forgotten about the cave experience. However, Karl noticed that he was having a hard time hiking. Usually, he could easily walk these trails without even breaking a sweat, now he could barely keep up with David.
"Let's take a small break," Karl told David when he felt like he was going to pass out.
"It's alright, I can still go on," David responded energetically.
"It's for me; I feel exhausted."
David gave his brother a surprised stare, and then smiled and said, "I can't believe this day finally happened. I am now in better shape than you."
Karl punched David in the arm. "Shut up; I just need a small rest." Karl found a rock to sit on. He took out his water bottle and drank half of it. He felt that he was really dehydrated because as he drank, he could feel sweat drops form all around his body. He took off his hat and rubbed all of the sweat off his forehead. As he put his hat back on, he saw that David was staring at him. "What?"
It's blonde now."
Confused, Karl tried to pull his hair to get a good look at it, but it was too short. His hair's original color was dark brown and no matter how long he spent in the sun, it never got lighter. He thought David was joking at first, but he seemed serious. "I'll take a look at it once we get back to camp. Nothing I can do about it now." David simply nodded. Karl stood up; usually he was a good few inches taller than his brother, but now he was almost the same height. Karl shook his head and thought: This day keeps on getting weirder.
They reached the camp about an hour later just as the sun was going down. Karl was completely worn out. David had noticed he was the same size or even taller. David teased his brother about it, but Karl was too tired to even care. Karl tossed this bag aside, changed his clothes into basketball shorts and a t-shirt, and climbed into his sleeping bag. He fell asleep instantly.
David thought something was definitely wrong with his brother. He probably got sick some time along the hike. He hoped that Karl would get better by the next day. As David lay down in his sleeping bag, he thought about the weird cave and the strange things happening to his brother, namely getting shorter and the change in hair color. He thought absent mindedly if they were connected as he drifted off to sleep.
Karl woke up to something brushing across his forehead and ears. He brushed it aside with his hand, but it came right back after a few seconds. Groggily, he kept on swiping it away, but it kept on coming back. All of a sudden, Karl was completely awake. Bugs! He quickly yelled and climbed out of the tent, trying to swat the bugs away.
David crawled out of the tent a few seconds later, yawning. "What are you doing? What's wrong with your hair?"
"My hair?" Karl stopped running out and ran his hand through his hair. It was longer. He could easily see it now as it was just shorter than his shoulders; it was definitely blonde. "Wha
How did this happen?" He tried to pull it out, but it was connected to his head.
David stood up and walked over to his brother. "This is too weird
" David said as he stood next to him. Karl looked up at David; he couldn't breathe as he realized he really had to look up to his younger brother. Before, Karl was just over six feet tall and David was three inches shorter than him. Now, Karl was a good two inches shorter than David. Freaking out, Karl ran away from David and the campsite into the forest.
After running for a few minutes, Karl was able to calm down and think over the situation. He realized his feet hurt, obviously from running bare foot. He decided to go over his body and check the things that had changed. First was obviously the height; he was now about six inches shorter than what he was before. Second was his hair; it was longer and it turned blonde. He brushed it behind his ear and continued checking over his body.
The next thing he noticed was most of his muscles that he had built up was practically gone; he was just as skinny as or skinnier than David. As he thought back to the day before, he realized his muscles were probably shrinking at that time. Another thing he noticed was that his clothes had slightly changed; his basketball shorts had become incredibly shorter and tighter and his shirt had become a lot larger so it almost reached his knees. It looked like he wasn't wearing any pants at all.
His brain couldn't comprehend all of the stuff that was happening. He decided to go to the bathroom to relieve the pressure a bit. He walked over to a nearby tree and opened up his pants. To his great alarm, 'it' was incredibly smaller. He started to yell as loud as he could out of frustration and shock.
A few minutes later, Karl made it back to camp where David was waiting with a mirror. Once David saw Karl again, his eyes went wide and his mouth opened. Before David could say anything, Karl held up his hand. "Don't say a word," he said; he noticed it was a little higher than it was before. Karl grabbed the mirror and went inside the tent, saying, "Stay out."
Once inside the tent, Karl took a good at himself in the mirror. He looked a little strange with the longer hair, but he basically looked the same, except the stubble he had built up over last four days was gone in exchange for an incredibly smooth face. As he looked closer, his eyes were bigger and his features were a little softer, more
Karl set the mirror down. "No, no," he told himself, "I'm not becoming more feminine." His heart was beating really fast. "This is not happening, this is not happening
" After a few minutes more, he decided to take action. He needed to get back home and see a doctor before anything else changed.
First of all, he needed to get changed. He started to lift up his shirt, but then stopped. "What if
" he said quietly. He cautiously took off his shirt and breathed out a sigh of relief. His chest was still the same, just without a lot of muscle and chest hair. He took out a green shirt and jeans. They fit surprisingly well, despite the fact that his body had changed; his shirt was even a little tight. No time to think about those things.
Karl got out of the tent. Before David could say anything, Karl said, "Don't say anything about the changes. We're going to go straight home and go to a doctor to see what's wrong with me. Let's get going." David simply nodded.
They packed away their camp and started their way back home. The car was usually about two hours away, but they realized it would take longer because of Karl's condition. Before, they would take turns carrying the tent, but Karl quickly realized it was impossible to carry it by himself. Since it would be difficult for David to carry it the whole way, they decided to carry it together, which made it very difficult to hike effectively.
As they were walking, David kept on glancing over at Karl. Usually, Karl would get angry and tell him to look away in a high voice, but that wouldn't stop him. Every time David looked at his brother, he looked a little different. His hair kept on getting longer (which he kept on trying to stuff it into his hat) and his figure became more petite. His face was the most shocking as it looked exactly like a girl. True to Karl's command, David didn't say anything; mainly because he didn't know what to say.
About an hour into the hike, Karl held his stomach and dropped the tent. He held up a finger and ran into the forest. Once Karl was far enough away, he knelt down on the ground and held his stomach. It felt like his insides were twisting and changing. He didn't know how long it took for the pain to go away. He tried to stand up and he almost fell back over; he felt a little different, like his center of gravity was off. He steadied himself and looked over to see what had changed.
He took off his hat and his hair flowed down the middle of his back. His waist was a bit wider now as well; he realized that was what threw off his balance. Hesitantly, he opened up his pants, which were now shorts, and looked inside. It was completely gone. Karl went numb, unable to think or feel anything. Emotionlessly, he lifted up his shirt. Sure enough, two small mounds were beginning to form on this chest; he touched them lightly and they were sensitive. Karl simply put his shirt down and fell back down to the ground, unable to think properly. After a few more minutes, he (Karl would not consider himself a she) picked himself up and walked back to David.
Just about the time David was about to go in after Karl, he saw his brother come back to the trail. It was still hard to comprehend that that person was his brother; he looked like a cute girl, as even his facial features had become completely feminine. David also noticed he even walked more like a girl. However, the thing that stood out the most was his eyes; they were very pretty, but they looked haunted and empty of emotion.
Just then, Karl and David made eye contact. All of those emotions Karl was trying to keep down came bubbling to the top in the form of tears. Karl rushed over to David, grabbed his shirt, leaned his head on his chest and just cried. David had no idea what to do, so he simply patted his head, which was very easy since Karl was a lot shorter.
After a short time, Karl managed to control his emotions. He let go and composed himself the best he could. He gave David a weak smile and said, "If you tell anybody about this, I'll kill you."
"My lips are sealed," David responded. "Shall we continue?" Karl nodded as he sniffed. David was shocked how cute his brother was, but he pushed those emotions down for more important matters.
They picked up the tent once again and continued their hike. After about half an hour, Karl started to stare at David. When David would glance over, they would both blush and look away. Then after a few minutes, Karl would look over again and the cycle would start over. Karl had no idea why he kept on looking at David or why he would blush afterward. He just knew that he couldn't help it and that his heart would skip a beat every time David looked at him. He tried to deny that it was attraction and he tried to stop looking at him, but he couldn't.
After about two hours of walking, they stopped to rest. They figured they still had about an hour left till they reached the car, since they were going at a slow pace. Karl left the trail once again to examine himself. He noticed his breasts, which were small before, were now much larger. He touched them once again and it sent the strangest feeling. 'So, that's what it feels like to have breasts.' He noticed that he also had a bra and panties. His shorts had changed into a short skirt. As far as Karl could tell, he had turned completely into a girl. For some odd reason, he was completely calm; it was expected, so there was no reason to panic. He just hoped they would be able to find a way to change back.
They continued their hike once Karl came back, but it was very short lived. After about fifteen minutes, Karl could no longer carry the tent. To David, it looked like Karl was on the verge of tears.
"It's alright," David said, "I can carry the tent the rest of the way." Karl looked up with tearful eyes then looked down and gave a quiet apology. David didn't know what was happening to his brother, but he knew they needed to get back as soon as possible.
Karl felt ashamed the she wasn't able to carry her own share of the weight, but her heart felt like it would burst once David said he would carry it all by himself. She couldn't help but blush. Karl felt very self-conscious as they began to walk side by side. She really wanted to hold on to his arm, but a part of her rejected it. After a few minutes, she couldn't resist it anymore and she grabbed his arm.
David tensed up and looked at Karl. "Um, Karl, what are you doing?"
She quickly jumped away; her face beat red, she said, "Nothing."
After a few more minutes, Karl couldn't resist again. She slowly reached over and grabbed his arm again. David tensed and looked at Karl, but he didn't say anything and just continued to walk. Karl let out a huge sigh of relief as she pulled herself closer to hug his arm between her breasts and reach down to hold his hand. She even leaned her head on his shoulder. Karl couldn't be happier and the hike seemed to end too quickly.
David, on the other hand, was placed in a difficult, conflicting position. He didn't know how to react. He knew that it was his brother who was hugging him close, but his body couldn't resist a cute girl. It was too late to back out now. The rest of the hike lasted forever, but he also didn't want it to end. He hoped Karl wouldn't kill him once he returned to normal.
They reached the car without any more incidents. Karl let out a very girlish cheer. David still was having a hard time dealing with her new personality. Once they loaded everything into the car, Karl reached into her bag and pulled out the car keys, but David reached over and grabbed the keys out of her hand.
Karl began to pout, "Why did you do that? I'm older so I'm driving."
"Um," David said, without looking at her directly in the eyes, "I don't think you can drive in your state. Let me see your driver's license." Luckily, he had gotten his license a few months before.
Karl pulled out her driver's license and, sure enough, it had the picture of Karl as a guy. "Fine," she said, still pouting, but then she smiled, "It looks like I get to play with you all the way home." It was a two hour drive back home.
As they pulled into the driveway, David let out a huge sigh of relief. 'That was the most awkward drive ever.' Throughout the whole ride, Karl kept on grabbing his arm, holding his hand, and trying to hug him. She ended up snuggling close to him most of the ride; it was a car with a middle seat next to the driver. They were lucky to make it back in one piece.
Karl got out of the car and stretched. "Ah, that was a nice ride." She then gazed at David and gave him a warm smile. David wondered how it ended up in this situation. During the ride home, he came to the conclusion that it was that crystal's fault. He just wondered why it affected Karl and not him. He needed to find out more information.
"I'm going to jump in the shower," Karl said, once they had unloaded everything inside. Luckily, their parents were still at work. David wouldn't know what to say to them if they were home.
"Okay, I'll get in after you."
Karl leaned in close, and said softly, "You know, we could always get in together."
David blushed a deep red. "Ah, um, no. Maybe another time."
"Oh, alright," she said teasingly, "I'll hold you to it."
Right before she walked in, David called out, "Before you get in, can I see your hat?"
Karl took off her hat and gave it to David with no hesitation. "Gladly." She then walked to the bathroom, turning around to give a small wink before going in.
Right when Karl went into the bathroom, David began preparing to leave. He stuffed as many clothes as he could into a bag and grabbed his stash of one thousand dollars that he was saving for a new computer. He wrote a quick note to Karl and his parents. David then put on his brother's hat and walked out the door. He didn't know if he was running away from home or if he was leaving just to try to find a way to fix Karl, but he realized it didn't matter. He knew he couldn't be at home any longer.
Karl got out of the shower and examined herself in the mirror. She whistled at the reflection; it was a perfect body and incredibly pretty. A small portion of her that was still the guy Karl felt extremely attracted to her and marveled that he was actually that girl. She had all of the memories as a guy, but she completely identified herself as a girl. The rest of her hoped that she was pretty enough to attract David. She felt complete whenever she was close. She hoped that asking David to join her in the shower wasn't too forward and that David would end up hating her. She stood in front of the mirror for a few more minutes, posing and practicing different things she could try on David.
She eventually got out and yelled to David it was his turn to get in the shower. She went to her room and she sighed. All of the clothes were still guy's clothing. She decided to put one on anyway. When she put it on, it magically fit to her form and became feminine. "Oh, that's neat."
After she got changed, she noticed the shower wasn't on. She knocked on David's door and said, "Didn't you hear me? You can get in." No answer. She opened up the door and nobody was there. In fact, it looked like a lot of stuff was missing. Panicking, Karl began to search the house. Nobody was there. However, she did find a letter in the kitchen. It read:
'Dear Mom, Dad, and Karl. I'm sorry to say I have run away from home. For some unknown reason, Karl has turned into a girl. It had something to do with the hike we recently went on. I'm going to search for a cure on my own. Please don't look for me.
Karl, I'm sorry for leaving you. I'll be back as soon as I can. Live your life the best you can; go to college and study hard. See you soon. You've been a great brother.
An hour later, David's and Karl's parents came home to a strange girl weeping in their house. She greeted them with a smile and handed them the letter. Their parents couldn't believe it at first, but after a series of questions and after they took her to the doctors, they confirmed that it was actually Karl. The police, scientist, and other people came from all over to research and study Karl; they weren't able to find out anything strange (she couldn't change the clothing after the first day). However, they were able to change the records to change Karl's gender to female and name to Carly. She was still able to go to the college she applied to.
They weren't able to find David though. They found his car at the nearest bus station, but they didn't know which way he went. They sent out a missing person picture to nearby cities, but nothing turned up. He effectively disappeared and the police gave up.
However, Carly didn't give up. She followed David's advice to go to college and study hard. She decided to become a scientist and journalist on the side to study her own transformation. Her whole purpose was to help and find her dear brother David.
